I stumbled across my account the other day and realized I haven't been on here in a few years.  Goodness! Anyone still here wondering if I'll come back? Posted a new photo just for the heck of it.  I'm wading through my inbox as we speak.  Lots to go through!
Well, I graduated and now its summer and I'm working hard. In the process of trying to find a full time job. This means I don't have that much time for photography. I am very happy with DA's new portfolio page, now I don't have to keep looking for one. Its got all I want for now.
Well thats all my news for now. If you'd like to stay in touch, please do. I do check my messages here fairly often.
Well, I'm nearing the end of my four years in college. I'll be graduating in 3 1/2 weeks and leaving Bellingham. I've had a wonderful time here at Western and I've learned a lot and certainly expanded my knowledge of photography. I'll be graduating with a Bachelor's of Art, photography concentration, and a Sociology Minor. Why a sociology minor? Mainly because I loved the classes and realized that I had already done most of it as GUR classes. As I near the end of my college life things will be changing a lot in my life. This summer will start the new chapter in my life. I don't really know what the future holds for me right now, but I do have one last summer working at the farm. I also don't know how often I'll be visiting DA.
  • Listening to: rain
I believe that a majority of you watch me for my horse photographs. This being the case I started uploading more horse images, but I feel like I'm getting even fewer comments. I know that DA isn't the greatest place to get feedback, but it would be nice to get some. I also think its stupid that to ask for critique on images you have to be a subscriber. Thats a whole lot of bull. I can ask for critique, I don't need a fancy extra box at the bottom of my deviations. People can give critique in comments. So, here's what I'm asking. I'd prefer comments and critique to favs. Tell me why you liked it and why you faved it.
  • Listening to: birds outside
  • Watching: students in the photo lab
  • Eating: cookies
Hey check this out: www.wwu.edu/artphotography/
Finally have a website for the photo department at Western. Pretty snazzy. Look at all those great students making a wonderful program. :)

How many photos on the photo website can you find with me in them? :)
It appears that my subscription ran out about a month or so ago. Oh well. I have noticed a significant decrease in numbers of people checking out my latest work. I wonder if it is because I'm not posting images of horses, or is it due to my lack of a subscription? Those of you who are still watching and reading, what do you think of my latest work? I'd love to hear from you all.

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays everyone!! I hope you all are well and that the holidays treat you well. I've had a wonderful year and a wonderful holiday so far. I'm heading to the coast with family soon. Its been snowing off an on for the past week. I think we're up to about a foot now. We haven't had this much snow in years and years! Its beautiful, but I'm done with it. I'll be happy when it turns to rain and starts to melt away.

Who steals from a campus gallery??

NEWS

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I think I'm going to cry. Two of my photographs have been stolen from the art building's student gallery tonight. Who does that?? Whoever it was didn't touch anyone else's work in the gallery. Only mine, and the room was supposedly locked all day. What the hell?? I've just reported it to campus police and I'm waiting to get a call back from them.

Hey all, I'm still alive! I've just been super busy, it is my senior year and all. There's only a week and a half left of classes before Finals. I've only got one final, in my sociology class. I'm not terribly worried about it.
Well lets see whats been going on in my little corner.. I've been working on my own photo work and enjoying myself. I'm a class assistant for the beginning photo class and I've been helping teach others how to take photos and print. I've been sick twice, I'm currently sick right now. I work on campus as a cashier in a market. I've been spending my free time with my sister and friends when I can or I watch the food network or Bravo. My photo seminar class is having an exhibition in two weeks in a gallery downtown. I'll be showing two pieces and I'm excited. I'm ready for thanksgiving break to spend time with my family and have some amazing food.
Hope you're all well. I'll try to share some new stuff soon.

Last weekend I picked up my sister and three of her friends from the dorms. I had them all dressed up in prom dresses or just fancy outfits.  They asked where we were going, but I didn't really have a specific place in mind at the time.  We drove down Chuckanut Drive along the coast into the Skagit Valley and then I started driving around the fields.  I found a fantastic wheat field and had the girls pile out and jump a ditch to get into the field. It was awesome. I also realized that its currently hunting season and there were hunters one field over from us.  We also had a car of hunters drive by and whistle at the girls. Haha.. From there we headed down the road and I found a park along the waterfront.  Did some more photos there and headed back north towards Bellingham.  Our last stop was the train tracks and I took more photos.. We had a great 3 hours together and really had fun. I spent all of Sunday sifting through the photos I took and edited them. I am so thrilled with how they look and I really think this is a direction I want to follow.  I really loved using the natural sunlight and the weather was fantastic. I think my next investment is a reflector so I can fix shadows. I really want to stay away from flashes, but a reflector should help.  Keep your fingers crossed that next weekend's weather will be wonderful 'cause I want to do this again. :D

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Hey all, just thought I'd let you know that I'm back into the world of digital cameras. I bought a Canon 40D to replace my broken Rebel. Its amazing, but I'm still trying to learn all the new stuff about it. I might end up actually reading the manual. haha.

If anyone's interested, this is whats happened since I last journaled:
Classes started, I'm taking Sociology of Gender and Education, a photography seminar class, and I'm a class assistant for the beginning photo class for credit.
I now work at a market on campus as a cashier on Fridays for a 7 hour shift of doom.. I work from 7:15 to 2:15, and there is no bus that early, so I walk 40 minutes to campus. It kind of sucks.
Went to a few BBQs and other fun events.
The INN started back up and I am now taking photos at every event they host.
I drove down to Seattle to get my lens back from the shop where they cleaned it. I also had dinner with my dad and did part of the First Thursday gallery walk in downtown.
Today I hiked the Chain Lakes trail up at Baker in a torrential downpour with a group of awesome people from the INN. By the end we were all completely soaked through all our layers. I believe it was 6 miles. It was awesome and now I have laundry going and all my camera bag components are strewn about my room drying out.. Yes, I took the new camera with me.. I'm such an abusive camera owner. It did great. :)

Well thats all for now. I'm exhausted from lack of sleep lately, so I'm going to do as Sleeping Beauty did and sleep for ages....

NEWS

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
[UPDATE]
So, here's the deal; the shutter is broken and costs about $250 to replace, so I think I'm going to end up just buying a new camera. I'm currently looking at two; the Canon 40D and the Canon XSi. The XSi is a lot cheaper, but I don't know if its what I want or need. The 40D uses CF cards, which I have as well as possibly being compatible with the batteries I already have. I want something professional that works well for outdoor photography; nature and animals as well as portraiture. I need it to work hard and travel well. I need all the input I can get because this is a big decision. As a college student, spending this much money is a big deal and requires a lot of research. I'd appreciate any help.
[end update]

Here's my problem:

big problem
About half of my photos from today are like this. I'm devastated. I don't know what happened. I'm taking in my camera tomorrow to get someone to look at it.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Today, uninvertantly I ended up getting a riding lesson from our pony instructor along with one of my co-workers's McKenzie. She had apparently been talking To Dale for a while about lessons and was finally going to have her first one. She asked if I wanted to join and Dale said yes join in! So I stayed late at work. At 5:30 we went up to the tack room with Dale and dug around in the bin for boots that would fit. If I'm going to keep riding I think I need to buy my own boots… Anyway, we basically started from the ground up.  I remembered most of how to groom, so we did grooming and Dale talked to us about the different zones of a horse, 1-5, and then about the drive line. Then we learned about saddling and the best way to carry a saddle one handed. ( I had never learned that so now my life is so much easier!) We saddled up, I finally learned how different saddle cinchs work. Then on the way to the round pen we worked on walking forward and back and getting the horse in tune with us. Once in the round pen we learned how to put the bridles on.  I had Despejo, and he had just a rope hacamore. We learned what to do with our machatis (sp?) sadly I didn't have a belt on so Dale made fun of me and I learned another thing to do with it.. Then we mounted up and worked on latterals and then started walking around the ring working on steering and one rein stops. Then we moved it up to a trot. Good lord, Despejo's trot is awesome.. He's a Paso Fino.. A gaited horse.. I've never been on one before. It was glorious.. :D
So, I've decided, I'm going to continue lessons.. I loved it and I want to know so much more. I'm on my way up!!!

Representation of the horse....

NEWS

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
As I mentioned earlier, I'm working on an independent study project this summer. My prof asked me to do some research on the representation of the horse in art in history. I'm having a little bit of trouble finding info. Any ideas? Any suggestions on key words to use in searches? Artists to look at?
At the moment I'm looking at Theodore Gericault's Charging Chausseur. I'm trying to find a painting with workhorses in it, but I can't remember any artists off the top of my head. The sun seems to be getting to me. :p I found that the Lipizzaner stallions represent Austria's glorious history. In the bible the horse represents intelligence. Native Americans see the horse as a symbol of freedom, wisdom, love, loyalty, and power.  Throughout history the horse has represented power and wealth.  In war paintings the horse represents the readiness to act, speed, intellect, and bravery.

PS... I'm going back down to ED tomorrow morning armed with a 70-200 f2.8 IS :D

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Year three of college is officially over. I was done on Monday. Two photo finals; two small multiple choice exams, two portfolio exchanges, one photo display in the student gallery. And one paper for my sociology class. I'm glad to be done, but I'm also kind of sad. This year most of my friends are staying up here to work or take summer classes. I'm heading home to work at the farm and work on some independent study credits. My summer is pretty much booked solid with work or horse events. I get a weekend with the family here and there. I don't think I'll be lonely, but I'll certainly miss my friends a lot. I'll try to share work here and there during the summer.

NEWS

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Hey everyone! Hope everyone's doing well. So just when I thought life was great and I was enjoying my photography classes, I got hit by a bus.. Not literally, but certainly figuratively.. So lately there's been a lot of issues going on at my university involving the professors and them not getting paid adequately.  A majority of the faculty has unionized and there have been meetings and ongoing spats with the administration.  Well, guess who's getting hurt by this? Me!! And my fellow students. We can't really do anything about it. We're paying tons of money to get an amazing education and now we're getting hurt.  My photo prof has been pulling out of non class activities in protest for not getting compensation for the stuff he does. A few weeks ago he asked me along with some of my fellow photo majors to put together a presentation for Scholars Week. Monday night I got an email from him saying he's withdrawing. The kicker? He sent it to the president of the university as well as the entire faculty.  I've been getting some responses. Another prof supported his decision and another (who just so happens to be another one of my teachers) didn't agree with his choice and offered to help us continue.  Just this afternoon I received another email from my photo prof. He's canceling our field trip to Vancouver BC to visit galleries. I'm so angry. I've been looking forward to that since the quarter started. Its not fair!! We didn't do anything wrong and we can't fix it. I also think is really inconsiderate and rude to suddenly withdraw from something you set up and promised to do. I just don't know what to do anymore...
I really like my prof, he's been a great teacher, but I don't know how much more of this I can take. Its just making me really angry. And I doubt that its going to make the administration suddenly change; its just hurting my education.

*sigh* Well in other news, the weather's been nice. I've been busy with different assignments and such. I'm heading home this weekend for Mother's Day and to visit my best friend. I need a weekend away.. I'll try to post a few photos soon.
